CHAPTER SIX

San Francisco

April 18, 1906

Wednesday afternoon, 3:00 p.m.

A large black steer came racing through the crowd. Its hooves pounded loudly on the streets and people were yelling, desperate to get out of way.

“Move!” someone shouted.

I grabbed my brother by the shoulder. “Hurry, Lee!” I yelled. “There’s a wild steer!”

We quickly pushed our way to the side of the street, just in time for the animal to rush past. The long horns almost caught my shirt. The steer ran farther up the road. The crowd scattered everywhere, but I couldn’t see what happened.
